Curriculum:
Reception is where the excitement begins! Reception children learn together in an environment which is developed around the children’s interests. We pride ourselves on being an exciting and engaging place to be - encouraging our children to be independent learners through a range of practical activities. We follow a thematic curriculum which allows us to be creative with our lessons and let the children lead their own learning. Please see our Welcome Pack for more information about our curriculum delivery.
We teach 2.5 hours of R.E. each week following To Know You More Clearly - the Religious Education Directory for Catholic schools.
We teach a daily discrete daily phonics session following the Little Wandle - Letters and Sounds Revised programme.
We teach guided reading on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays - these books are changed weekly on a Wednesday.
We teach a daily mathematics session following the White Rose Maths programme.
We teach English following the Pathways to Write programme.
P.E. is taught by coaches from Carlisle United on Tuesdays and Thursday - please send your child to school wearing their P.E. kit on these days.
Parents as Partners:
We recognise the importance of parents and carers in a child’s developing stages. As a primary care provider, you are your child’s first educators and we greatly value any input, opinions and information you can share with us about your child’s learning and progress. To support this, we produce a ‘Learning Journey’ on Tapestry within the classroom that records your child’s learning and achievements during school. We also encourage you to contribute to these by making small observations at home, especially those related to targets your child might be working towards (e.g. ordering numerals 1-10).
We ask you to support with your child’s learning in lots of practical ways through play and conversation, and by reading with your child as often as possible, but at least 5 times a week.
End of Year Curriculum Expectations:
At the end of Reception, we complete The EYFS profile, a statutory assessment of children’s development at the end of the academic year in which children turn 5. More information can be found via the link below.
